Dear Desert Shadows Parents/Tutors,

Desert Shadows Middle School will be reopening for In-school hybrid instruction Monday March 15th, immediately following Spring Break (March 8-12). The normal school schedule will be followed with the exception for Wednesdays where we will be all online and closed for in-person instruction (Due to Disinfecting the school from use). The two options for return to school remain the same as the October 2020 reopening.

Hybrid: Students with the last names A-L (Group A) can attend school Mondays, and Tuesdays only. Group A will continue Online Instruction Wednesdays through Fridays. Students with last name M-Z (Group B) can attend school Thursdays and Fridays only. Group B will continue online instruction Mondays-Wednesdays.

Online Only: student will login in each day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday to the class Google Meets session. These students will also follow the new bell schedule and Wednesday bell schedule.

Wednesday will remain as they are now for extra help from teachers using the “Wednesday Bell Schedule”.

Student Drop off will be allowed in the front of the school only where a check-in procedure will take place. Due to NUSD school reopening policies and CDC guidelines a questionnaire and temperature will be required for all students and staff entering the building. Please have students remain in the car until it is their turn to be checked in. Parents must remain in the car and not enter the building with the exception for an emergency. Please call the office with any information to report regarding your student.  Students taking the bus will be checked in though the bus entrance at the back of the school. All students getting off the bus will also undergo a questionnaire and temperature check. Masks will continue to be required at all times on the bus and on campus. Any students that are sick with any symptoms or a fever greater than 98.7 must remain home. Students arriving with symptoms will be sent home. Please assist us with ensuring the health and safety of all our DSMS students and staff.

Please keep in mind that this date for reopening school is tentative and may be changed depending on the data/benchmark positivity rates that are changing weekly.

Thank you to the DSMS community and we anticipate a great reopening. Please contact the office for any questions or further details needed as we prepare for hybrid instruction.

Stay Safe and Happy Spring Break. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Esperamos verlos pronto!

Good afternoon DSMS parents and tutors,

Desert Shadows Middle School will be holding the 2nd Semester virtual/online Parent Teacher Conference this Wednesday, March 3rd, 2021 from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM. Using the same format used during our first semester Parent-Teacher conferences back in October.  The conferences will be held using Google Meets, the same application students use to attend classes daily online. Each teacher will post their sign- up link to their Google Classroom pages so students/parents will see it.  Additionally, the sign up link is available on our Facebook page.

To sign up for the teachers you would like to meet with you need to select the teacher’s name from the grade level your child is currently in. Each teacher will be listed so ensure you have signed up for the correct teacher and the time slots available. The conferences will last 5 minutes each as to allow time for all parents needing to meet with their student’s teacher. Please be mindful that we are limited to this 5-minute conference.  Thank you in advance for having patience with this online conference process and we hope to ensure that it goes as smoothly as possible.  If any questions arise please feel free to reach out the DSMS office so we can guide you to the correct link, application, and meeting times.

Thank you for all your support and patience as we continue the online/distance learning and online Parent Teacher Conferences.

Sincerely,

Christopher Miranda, Principal

October 20, 2020

Good afternoon Desert Shadows Middle School parents and school community,

Thank you to those of you who have read and are aware of the changes to the attendance policy for the second quarter.  Due to ongoing school leadership guidance and for the best interest of our school community, the attendance policy will revert back to the previously used attendance policy.

This means that all students will be asked to complete an online attendance form each morning sent out through each of your students’ teachers in Google Meets, for all seven periods. Hybrid students who are at DSMS on in-person days will be marked present each period when they are physically attending class on their hybrid days. All online students, both those working fully online and those in the hybrid model (on the days they are assigned to work online from home) will be marked present for the entire school day so long as they complete the Google Attendance Form their teacher sends out each morning.  This consistency to check-in daily through Google Classroom daily will be easier for students to follow, no matter the model they are enrolled in for instruction.

Thank you for being understanding and flexible as we correct the attendance expectations moving forward. It is still important that students make progress in their classes daily on Edgenuity and receive supplementary instruction through Google Meets. Additionally, we want to be clear that we are still offering tutoring after school Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday virtually only. Teachers will be flexible to allow students time to get home from school before starting their tutoring sessions. There will not be an after-school activity bus until further notice, and hence no need for students in the hybrid model to be on campus after school has ended for the day.

Additionally, our parent teacher conferences will be held virtually on Wednesday, October 28, 2020 from 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Please click on the following link to schedule your appointment with each of your child's teachers.

DSMS Virtual Parent Teacher Conferences Link

Thank you for your continued support and feedback. Please continue to provide your valued feedback as we work to navigate the school reopening plan and online distance learning.

Sincerely,

Christopher Miranda, Principal

Welcome back to our 2020 – 2021 school year! We hope all the families in our DSMS community are safe and doing well. I am writing to welcome you back and to inform you as we proceed into this school year with different challenges and ambitions for academic success. I know many families are uncertain on how the 2020-2021 school year will proceed. I want to assure you that we have been working diligently with NUSD, community stakeholders, families, teachers, and public health officials to determine the safest way to start school. We are prepared to follow all recommendations and orders from the governor of Arizona, Mr. Doug Ducey, Superintendent of Schools Kathy Hoffman as well as our local health officials, Center for Disease Control and experts related to the pandemic.

Early next week, students will get invitations for google classroom from each of their teachers (one for each of our seven periods) To get to these invitations, students will select their g-mail account at the bottom of the screen (if you have a school issued Chromebook) For students using their own devices, you will need to log into google and the student’s Gmail. For technical support, please call 520-397-7919. Students should accept these invitations for each class.  On August 5th, students should log in to their 1st period google classroom at 8:00 a.m. and will follow the attached virtual schedule.  Student’s first period teacher will take attendance and instruct them on how to use google classroom and Edgenuity.

With this letter, we have included the District calendar, virtual learning schedule, a letter regarding virtual learning, update on meal service, and handout for Clever (used for devices that are not issued by NUSD). In addition, we will be mailing the Student Behavior Expectations for the District and the School Reopening Plan.

The staff and faculty want the best education for your child, and are ready to start the 2020-2021 school year online until it is safe to start in person. Please feel free to call the front office with any questions as we implement the start of the school year procedures. Thank you for all your support and entrusting NUSD and Desert Shadows with your child's education. We hope all your families are staying safe and are eager to start the 2020-2021 school year.

Sincerely,

Christopher Miranda

Principal

Good afternoon Desert Shadows Parent and community,

We hope this communication finds you safe and doing well. We are writing to further clarify and assist you with the start of the 2020-2021 school year at DSMS. Classes will begin August 5th and will be online only through August 14th by order of the Governor of the State of Arizona Doug Ducey.  Desert Shadows Middle School will focus on providing online education to meet your childs’ educational needs by doing the following. All online classes are aligned to the Arizona State Standards and following the guidelines of the Arizona Department of Education (ADE). All students will use Edgenuity, an educational platform that will be implemented and taught by your childs’ in-person scheduled teachers for each subject. Using Edgenuity students will work through different units within each content subject where they will be provided with an introduction, instruction, summary and review of what is covered, several assignments/quizzes/tests and a unit exam. In addition to Edgenuity, every teacher will use Google Classroom and/or Google Meet for supplemental instruction. In these platforms teachers can video conference or call students as well as have a working classroom website to answer questions to further review each of the units being covered in Edgenuity. In both platforms (Edgenuity and Google Classroom / Google Meet) students will have virtual interaction (conferencing through the camera device your child is using) with teachers as well as audio and video resources that will serve as pedagogical resources for each of their classes and thus maintain a high level of education.

In the event NUSD and DSMS return to a traditional or in-person instruction (brick and mortar where students return to campus), the entire school and district community will be informed of the process that will take place for all students who wish to return to in-person or a hybrid format (combination of live and on-line classes using Edgenuity/Google Meet). We are taking the best approach possible to implement distance education, as well as to address your concerns about sending your child to classes in person. Parents that would prefer full online classes for the entire school year, will be available. The Online classes being implemented though the use of Edgenuity and Google Classroom offer a comprehensive and challenging curriculum each of your classes from core classes to all elective classes, meanwhile provide the direct contact to your child’s teachers for all subjects. Students will be graded through Power School and online participation will be required.

We look forward to the start of the new school year and will continue to provide a solid educational foundation for your child. Although challenges with distance learning will arise, we are fully committed to be available and teach through the model provided. We hope you stay safe and healthy during these difficult times.

Sincerely,

Christopher Miranda,
Principal

Dear Desert Shadows Middle School Parents/Guardian,

We hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits. As you know, the first day of school is Wednesday, August 5, 2020. Please remember that all students will be working online until school is reopened for in-person instructional options. On Tuesday, August 4, 2020, you will receive a Google Classroom invitation from your child’s classroom teacher. Please follow the simple instructions to access online. On the main page of the Google Classroom, your child’s teachers will have posted additional information regarding online learning.

During the first few days, teachers will focus on assisting students in understanding their role as online learners. They will provide details regarding daily schedules and resources to be used, as well as explaining the different features of their Google Classroom and how to navigate to individual learning on Edgenuity. Your child’s teachers will also provide assistance on an individual basis if needed. Once you have access to your child’s Google Classroom, you will find information and resources intended specifically for you as a parent under a topic titled “General Information and Resources for Parents”.

With having an entire school community online for the first time, we may expect some technical difficulties. If this happens, do not worry. We are here to help and support you and your child every step of the way.

For technical support, please call our office and we will direct your call. Your child’s teachers will also be available via email or you may call our office to leave a message. If you have any technical difficulties, please contact the NUSD Technology Department at (520) 520-397-7919. The technology office will be available from 7:00am - 4:00pm.

Below are recommendations to prepare your child for online learning:

  • Get your device ready for use. If you do not have a device, please make sure to contact your child’s school. If you have already completed a request, the scheduled pickup dates are:
    • Thursday, July 30, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for students attending 6th grade.
    • Friday, July 31, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for students attending 7th grade.
    • Monday, August 3, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for students attending 8th grade.
  • If using a personal device, please make sure you have access to Google. Some devices require a download of the Google App.
  • Select a comfortable, quiet space for your child to learn. If you have more than one child, allow for enough space to engage in learning.

Thank you and stay safe,

Christopher Miranda

Dear NUSD Parents and School Community,

Welcome to the 2020-20201 school year. Although things are different this year, we are excited to begin the year with new online programs.

To help our students and families with the online instruction, NUSD will be checking out laptops to each student who needs a device. If your NUSD student needs a laptop please fill out the form below using the link below. Please note that families in need, who lack internet access, can also request a “MiFi” device. If you are unable to complete the form online, please feel free to contact your child’s school to assist you in completing the form.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe3ikv1yWNxsWVY0YuRW7gstdPRaLrmamq1i1DtoX5dLbraYA/viewform

We ask that you please read the form carefully as parents and guardians will be acknowledging district policies and regulations regarding the use of district electronics such as the laptops and devices. At the time you pick up the electronic devices, there is no need for you to sign any paperwork, as the request form submitted for the devices is the acknowledgment and acceptance of the expectations, policies, and procedures for the use of the devices.

The electronic devices are to be picked up by the student’s parent/legal guardian. The school principals will be sending out more information regarding the pick-up dates and times. Please refer to the district/school websites, Messenger emails, and Facebook pages for additional information. Each school will be sending out information regarding educational software systems and technical support.

As the CDC guidelines suggest, take care and please:

- Be safe and personally responsible.

- Wear a mask/face covering to protect yourself and others.

- Avoid large and public gatherings.

- Practice hand washing and good hygiene often and consistently.

- Stay home as much as possible.

Stay safe and healthy!

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe3ikv1yWNxsWVY0YuRW7gstdPRaLrmamq1i1DtoX5dLbraYA/viewform

- Sea seguro y personalmente responsable.

¡Mantente seguro y saludable!
