Diamondback News

Dear Desert Shadows Parents/Guardians,

As you all have been informed NUSD will be returning to school on October 19, 2020 after Fall Break.  At this time, families will have the choice of two options to send their child back to school:

Hybrid: In the hybrid models the student body will be divided alphabetically.  The hybrid model will allow the students to attend classes with their teachers 2 days a week: Group A will come to school on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Group B will come to school on Thursdays and Fridays.   Wednesday will remain as they are now for extra help from teachers.  On the days that the students are not physically in class, they will log in to the class and attend remotely via Google meets.

Online Only: The other option for our students is to remain completely online.  In this option, the student will login in each day Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday to the class Google Meets session.

This survey will be vital to make sure all students are assigned properly and make the transition as smooth as possible.  Students will be allowed to transition from one model to the other with administrative approval.

Thank you for your cooperation in filling out this survey by Monday, September 28.

Dear Desert Shadows Middle School Parents and Students,

Welcome back to our 2020 – 2021 school year! We hope all the families in our DSMS community are safe and doing well. I am writing to welcome you back and to inform you as we proceed into this school year with different challenges and ambitions for academic success. I know many families are uncertain on how the 2020-2021 school year will proceed. I want to assure you that we have been working diligently with NUSD, community stakeholders, families, teachers, and public health officials to determine the safest way to start school. We are prepared to follow all recommendations and orders from the governor of Arizona, Mr. Doug Ducey, Superintendent of Schools Kathy Hoffman as well as our local health officials, Center for Disease Control and experts related to the pandemic.

Early next week, students will get invitations for google classroom from each of their teachers (one for each of our seven periods) To get to these invitations, students will select their g-mail account at the bottom of the screen (if you have a school issued Chromebook) For students using their own devices, you will need to log into google and the student’s Gmail. For technical support, please call 520-397-7919. Students should accept these invitations for each class.  On August 5th, students should log in to their 1st period google classroom at 8:00 a.m. and will follow the attached virtual schedule.  Student’s first period teacher will take attendance and instruct them on how to use google classroom and Edgenuity.

With this letter, we have included the District calendar, virtual learning schedule, a letter regarding virtual learning, update on meal service, and handout for Clever (used for devices that are not issued by NUSD). In addition, we will be mailing the Student Behavior Expectations for the District and the School Reopening Plan.

The staff and faculty want the best education for your child, and are ready to start the 2020-2021 school year online until it is safe to start in person. Please feel free to call the front office with any questions as we implement the start of the school year procedures. Thank you for all your support and entrusting NUSD and Desert Shadows with your child's education. We hope all your families are staying safe and are eager to start the 2020-2021 school year.

Good afternoon Desert Shadows Parent and community,

We hope this communication finds you safe and doing well. We are writing to further clarify and assist you with the start of the 2020-2021 school year at DSMS. Classes will begin August 5th and will be online only through August 14th by order of the Governor of the State of Arizona Doug Ducey.  Desert Shadows Middle School will focus on providing online education to meet your childs’ educational needs by doing the following. All online classes are aligned to the Arizona State Standards and following the guidelines of the Arizona Department of Education (ADE). All students will use Edgenuity, an educational platform that will be implemented and taught by your childs’ in-person scheduled teachers for each subject. Using Edgenuity students will work through different units within each content subject where they will be provided with an introduction, instruction, summary and review of what is covered, several assignments/quizzes/tests and a unit exam. In addition to Edgenuity, every teacher will use Google Classroom and/or Google Meet for supplemental instruction. In these platforms teachers can video conference or call students as well as have a working classroom website to answer questions to further review each of the units being covered in Edgenuity. In both platforms (Edgenuity and Google Classroom / Google Meet) students will have virtual interaction (conferencing through the camera device your child is using) with teachers as well as audio and video resources that will serve as pedagogical resources for each of their classes and thus maintain a high level of education.

In the event NUSD and DSMS return to a traditional or in-person instruction (brick and mortar where students return to campus), the entire school and district community will be informed of the process that will take place for all students who wish to return to in-person or a hybrid format (combination of live and on-line classes using Edgenuity/Google Meet). We are taking the best approach possible to implement distance education, as well as to address your concerns about sending your child to classes in person. Parents that would prefer full online classes for the entire school year, will be available. The Online classes being implemented though the use of Edgenuity and Google Classroom offer a comprehensive and challenging curriculum each of your classes from core classes to all elective classes, meanwhile provide the direct contact to your child’s teachers for all subjects. Students will be graded through Power School and online participation will be required.

We look forward to the start of the new school year and will continue to provide a solid educational foundation for your child. Although challenges with distance learning will arise, we are fully committed to be available and teach through the model provided. We hope you stay safe and healthy during these difficult times.

Dear Desert Shadows Middle School Parents/Guardian,

We hope this letter finds you in good health and spirits. As you know, the first day of school is Wednesday, August 5, 2020. Please remember that all students will be working online until school is reopened for in-person instructional options. On Tuesday, August 4, 2020, you will receive a Google Classroom invitation from your child’s classroom teacher. Please follow the simple instructions to access online. On the main page of the Google Classroom, your child’s teachers will have posted additional information regarding online learning.

During the first few days, teachers will focus on assisting students in understanding their role as online learners. They will provide details regarding daily schedules and resources to be used, as well as explaining the different features of their Google Classroom and how to navigate to individual learning on Edgenuity. Your child’s teachers will also provide assistance on an individual basis if needed. Once you have access to your child’s Google Classroom, you will find information and resources intended specifically for you as a parent under a topic titled “General Information and Resources for Parents”.

With having an entire school community online for the first time, we may expect some technical difficulties. If this happens, do not worry. We are here to help and support you and your child every step of the way.

For technical support, please call our office and we will direct your call. Your child’s teachers will also be available via email or you may call our office to leave a message. If you have any technical difficulties, please contact the NUSD Technology Department at (520) 520-397-7919. The technology office will be available from 7:00am - 4:00pm.

Below are recommendations to prepare your child for online learning:

  • Get your device ready for use. If you do not have a device, please make sure to contact your child’s school. If you have already completed a request, the scheduled pickup dates are:
    • Thursday, July 30, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for students attending 6th grade.
    • Friday, July 31, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for students attending 7th grade.
    • Monday, August 3, 2020 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for students attending 8th grade.
  • If using a personal device, please make sure you have access to Google. Some devices require a download of the Google App.
  • Select a comfortable, quiet space for your child to learn. If you have more than one child, allow for enough space to engage in learning.

Thank you and stay safe,

Christopher Miranda

Dear NUSD Parents and School Community,

Welcome to the 2020-20201 school year. Although things are different this year, we are excited to begin the year with new online programs.

To help our students and families with the online instruction, NUSD will be checking out laptops to each student who needs a device. If your NUSD student needs a laptop please fill out the form below using the link below. Please note that families in need, who lack internet access, can also request a “MiFi” device. If you are unable to complete the form online, please feel free to contact your child’s school to assist you in completing the form.

We ask that you please read the form carefully as parents and guardians will be acknowledging district policies and regulations regarding the use of district electronics such as the laptops and devices. At the time you pick up the electronic devices, there is no need for you to sign any paperwork, as the request form submitted for the devices is the acknowledgment and acceptance of the expectations, policies, and procedures for the use of the devices.

The electronic devices are to be picked up by the student’s parent/legal guardian. The school principals will be sending out more information regarding the pick-up dates and times. Please refer to the district/school websites, Messenger emails, and Facebook pages for additional information. Each school will be sending out information regarding educational software systems and technical support.

As the CDC guidelines suggest, take care and please:

- Be safe and personally responsible.

- Wear a mask/face covering to protect yourself and others.

- Avoid large and public gatherings.

- Practice hand washing and good hygiene often and consistently.

- Stay home as much as possible.

Stay safe and healthy!

- Sea seguro y personalmente responsable.

- Use una máscara / cubierta facial para protegerse y proteger a los demás.

- Evitar reuniones grandes y públicas.

- Practique el lavado de manos y una buena higiene a menudo y de manera constante.

- Quédese en casa tanto como sea posible.

¡Mantente seguro y saludable!

Fernando Parra
